Third Test: England win despite a brave effort from Aussie tail-enders
The game ended within three days time as Australia succumbed to yet another defeat. It could have been worse, had it not for their young wicket keeper Peter Nevill and pacer Mitchell Starc.
Nevill scored 59, his first international Test fifty in 147 deliveries. Starc fought till the end, scoring 58 runs. The duo added 64 runs for the eighth wicket partnership.
After Nevill’s departure, Starc paired up with Josh Hazlewood to add another 28 runs for the ninth wicket and a ‘score’ more with the number 11 Nathan Lyon. It helped Australia post a target of 121 runs for England to chase down.
The Australian innings folded for 265 runs. Steven Finn ploughed through them picking up 6 wickets for 79 runs. One each was shared by Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad and James Anderson.
England lost a wicket early in their chase. Skipper Cook departed for 7. Adam Lyth was the next to go, after scoring just 12 runs. Ian bell and Joe Root added 73 for the third wicket to finish things off. Both the batsmen remained not out. Bell scored 65 and Root managed 38.
Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc picked up a wicket each.
Steven Finn took home the Man-of-the match award for his excellent bowling figures. He picked up 8 wickets in the match, one more than James Anderson.
