Test: Ballance, Cook help England dominate first day

Southampton, July 27 (IBNS): English batsmen controlled the first day of the third Test match against India as the hosts finished the day at 247 for two here on Sunday.

Gary Ballance (104*) and Ian Bell  (16*) will resume the proceedings on Monday.

Losing the wicket of Sam Robson (26), England skipper Alaister Cook and Ballance took charge of the innings as Indian bowlers failed to break the partnership easily.

Cook,  who seemed set to end his 27-innings wait for a century, failed once agains despite a good start as he lost his wicket to Ravindra Jadeja at his personal score of 95.

He smashed nine boundaries in his knock.

Ballance on the other hand was undisturbed by the Indian bowlers and played a fine knock of 104 runs. He smashed his fifth century in five Tests.

Ballance hit 15 boundaries in his unbeaten innings so far.

Mohammed Shami picked up the other wicket for India.

Pacer Pankaj Sharma made his debut for India in the match as he replaced injured Ishant Sharma. India also played Rohit Sharma for Stuart Binny.

Man-in-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar failed to pick up a single wicket on Sunday.

India is 1-0 up in the series.
