Ben Stokes (128) smashed a crucial innings as he joined Jonny Bairstow (46) to add 99 runs in the sixth wicket partnership.
It was Stokes and his innings which put England on an advantageous position.
He hit 13 boundaries and two sixes in his 235-ball commanding knock.
Moeen Ali, who scored another century and played a major role in helping the visitors pile up a massive total at the scorecard, moved from 99 overnight to 117.
At the end of the first day's play, England were England 311-4.
Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets for India.
