SA trail India by 173 runs, end the day at 28-2

Chandigarh, Nov 5 (IBNS) R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja troubled South African batsmen as they reduced the opponents to 28 for two at the end of the first day of the first Test against India on Thursday.

Indian batsmen struggled in front of the South African bowling and were bowled out for 201 runs with just Murali Vijay shining with the willow as he scored 75 runs.

Cheteshwar Pujara (31) and Ravindra Jadeja (38) failed to convert the start they got in the innings.

However,Virat Kohli (1) , Shikhar Dhawan (0) and Wriddhiman Saha (0) did not contribute much with the willow.

Vijay hit 12 boundaries in his knock of 136 balls while adding 63 runs in the second wicket partnership with Pujara.

Dean Elgar contributed significantly with the ball for South Africa as he took four wickets by giving away 22 runs which helped him destroy the Indian batting line up.

Vernon Philander  and Imran Tahi took two wickets for the visitors.

South Africa were reduced to 28 for two in the match with the side losing the wickets of Stiaan van Zyl (5) and Faf du Plessis  (0).

R Ashwin shined with the ball as he finished the day with a bowling figure of  7-3-4-1.

Elgar (13*) and Hasim Amla (9*) remained unbeaten at stumps.

South Africa trail by 173 runs.
