Sydney: Australian Test captain Pat Cummins will return home in the middle of an ongoing India tour 'due to a serious family illness', the country's cricket board confirmed on Monday.

However, he is expected to return to play the remaining two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar series.

Australia are battling a tough Test series in India as the home side defeated the former World Champions in the first two matches.

India ensured retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after two back-to-back victories.

Rohit Sharma and his men are currently 2-0 up in the series.

Cricket Australia said in a statement: "Australia captain Pat Cummins is leaving the ongoing Qantas tour of India due to a serious family illness, but is expected to return for the third Test."

"The fast bowler was en route to Sydney on Sunday but is expected to be back in India to play the final two matches in Indore and Ahmedabad," the board said.

The next two matches will be played in Indore (Mar 1-5) and Ahmedabad (Mar 9 -13).

India's three-match ODI series against the former World Champions will commence on Mar 17 in Mumbai.

The second ODI will be held in Vizag on Mar 19 and the third in Chennai on Mar 22.
