Mohammad Nabi steps down as skipper after loss to Australia in T20 WC clash

Kabul: Afghanistan cricket team skipper Mohammad Nabi stepped down after his side lost in a Super 12 match against Australia on Friday.

Rashid Khan's late cameo helped Afghanistan in getting close to the target in their final Super 12 encounter of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup against Australia in Adelaide but they still fell short by four runs, bringing an end to their campaign.

Nabi announced his decision by posting a statement on Twitter.

"Our T20 World Cup journey came to an end, with a result that not we nor our supporters were expecting. We are as frustrated as you are with the outcome of matches," he said in a statement.

"From the last year, our team preparation was not to a level that a captain would want or need for a big tournament. Moreover, in some of the last tours the team management, selection committee and I were not on the same page which had implications on the team balance" he added.

Nabi, despite resigning as skipper, said he will continue to play for his country.

" Therefore, with due respect, effective immediately announce to STEP DOWN as a CAPTAIN & will continue to play for my country when the management & team need me," he said.
