Kings XI Punjab appoints Anil Kumble has head coach

Mohali (IBNS/UNI): Kings XI Punjab team has appointed former Indian captain and coach Anil Kumble as it's head coach for the next session of the Indian Premier League.

The appointment was made after Mike Hesson exit from the post.

Kumble had served as the head coach of India from 2016-17.

Kumble was earlier involved in IPL when he was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The former leg spinner was the player and captain with Royal Challengers Bangalore before joining the team as a mentor later on.

Kumble, who is India's highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, will be replacing Mike Hesson who in August parted ways with the Punjab-based franchise after one season at helm with them.

The legendary leg-spinner's first assignment as head coach of KXIP will be at IPL auction, scheduled for December 19 in Kolkata.

Anil Kumble had previously been the chief mentor of Mumbai Indians. He was appointed in the role in 2013 and the MI went on to win their maiden IPL title in that year. Kumble had left a similar role at Royal Challengers Bangalore to join the 4-time champions in that year.

In June 2016, he was appointed as the head coach of the Indian men's team by BCCI for a period of one year but resigned due to "untenable" differences with captain Virat Kohli.
