Khel Ratna: Karnataka HC issues notices to Sania Mirza, Sports Ministry

| | Aug 27, 2015, at 02:03 am
Bengaluru, Aug 26 (IBNS) The Karnataka High Court found some substance in paralympian H N Girisha's move of challenging the Sports Ministry's decision to confer Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to Indian Tennis icon Sania Mirza as notices were served to the Wimbledon doubles title winner and the Ministry.

Girisha, a silver medal winner at the 2012 London Paralympics and a bronze medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games for high jump, was dissatisfied with the decision of overlooking him for the tennis star.

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday admitted the paralympian’s petition and after hearing his claims, Justice A S Bopanna served notices to the respondents.

They have been given a 15 days’ time to reply back on the issue.

Mirza was only the second Tennis player after Leander Peas to be nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. Leander had won it in 1996.
