India-New Zealand third test : Kohli and Rahane put team in strong position

Indore, Oct 1 (IBNS) : A smashing ton by skipper Virat Kohli and his unbroken fourth wicket partnership with Ajinkya Rahane put India in a strong position with 267 for the loss of three wickets in their first innings at the end of the opening day of the third and final cricket test against New Zealand.

Both Kohli (103) and Rahane (79) remained unbeaten with a partnership of 167 runs between them when stumps were drawn.

This was Kohli's 13th tests century and the first in the current series, which India  have already won the series with a 2-0 margin.

Earlier in the day, India made a brisk start with openers Murli Vijay and Gautam Gambhir going good,  but both the openers fell within the team's score on 60. While Vijay scored ten, Gambhir, a test recall, made 29, including two over boundaries and two boundaries.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli  put on 40 runs for the third wicket in what appeared to be a prompt recovery. But  just after lunch, Pujara was dismissed for 100 at his individual 41.

From then on Kohli and Rahane  pulled India out of the scare of early dismissal, playing stellar roles to frustrate the Kiwi bowling.
