India beat Ireland 3-2 in Rio opener

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (IBNS): Indian hockey team commenced their Olympic campaign with a bang as they defeated Ireland by 3-2 on Saturday.

Rupinder Pal Singh (27th and 49th) and V.R. Raghunath (15th minute) shined for the Indian side as they scored three goals to giver India a chance to script a strong start to their campaign.

Ireland managed to reduce the deficit as John Jermyn (45th), Conor Harte (55th) slipped in two goals.

India managed their first victory in a Olympic hockey match after 12 years.
