England stay alive! Tom Banton anchors crucial T20 World Cup win over Scotland
Kolkata/IBNS: England waded off the growing uncertainty over their progression in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, sweeping neighbours Scotland by five wickets at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Tom Banton remained unbeaten on 63 off 41 balls, guiding his side home after recurrent turbulence in the chase of 153 set by Scotland in front of a decent crowd at the iconic venue.
Banton stitched together a crucial 66-run partnership for the third wicket with Jacob Bethell (32) and later added 46 runs for the fifth wicket with Sam Curran, who played a composed anchoring role after early setbacks.
England suffered early blows with the dismissals of Phil Salt and skipper Jos Buttler, putting the chase under pressure.
Curran’s dismissal late in the innings briefly revived Scotland’s hopes, but Banton, along with Will Jacks (unbeaten 16), ensured there were no further hiccups as England sealed a crucial victory to keep their campaign alive.
Though England secured a five-wicket victory, the scoreline does not fully reflect how competitive the contest was, with Scotland producing spirited moments and fighting back at key stages.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, England captain Harry Brook admitted the chase was far from straightforward but stressed the importance of building momentum gradually in a global tournament.
“The run chase hasn’t been as straightforward as we’d have liked it to be. We obviously lost to the West Indies, and tonight we were losing wickets. We don’t want to start off on a high in the world competition but want to kind of build up, and hopefully we can carry the confidence from tonight into the Italy match,” Brook said.
Earlier, Scotland posted 152 all out in 19.4 overs despite a fighting 49 from captain Richie Berrington.
Berrington, who struck five fours and two sixes, led a counterattack after Scotland were reduced to 18-2 and later 42-3. He added a vital 71-run partnership with Tom Bruce to stabilise the innings.
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid turned the tide for England, dismissing Berrington and finishing with impressive figures of 3/36 in his four overs despite an expensive spell earlier.
Reflecting on Berrington’s threatening knock, Brook said, “He played beautifully. He was attacking our best bowlers and looking to put them under pressure. It was about changing things at that time and bringing Sam and Jamie back in the middle. They bowled a couple of quiet overs and then it was time to go back to the spinners, who thankfully got us the breakthroughs.”
