Didn't understand Duckworth Lewis method: Dinesh Karthik
Kolkata, Apr 21 (IBNS): Kolkata Knight Riders' captain Dinesh Karthik on Saturday said he could not figure out the Duckworth Lewis method, which made the match considerably easier for Kings XI Punjab to win with a revised asking rate of just six per over here on Saturday.
In a sporting encounter at the Eden Gardens on Saturday, Punjab defeated Kolkata by nine wickets.
Reacting to whether the result would have been different had the match been played with no curtail of overs, Karthik, at the post-match press conference, said: "It is a hard one to say. We needed two wickets at that stage then start putting pressure on them. It was important to take the wickets of Gayle and KL Rahul that I was really wishing to happen. But they played some good shots and got away." (sic)
"So it is hard for me to predict what would have happened, but, yes it was interesting to see the change in required run rate for Kings XI Punjab after the play resumed. Earlier they need eight an over but suddenly then required six per over after the resumption of play. It was surprising. (sic)
"After we came back to play, they needed run a ball. I didn't understand that. But I think Duckworth Lewis has been something that people are people are trying to figure out," he added.
After Kolkata piled 191/7 in 20 overs on the scoreboard, it was the Chris Gayle-KL Rahul show at one of the oldest cricket grounds in the world.
Chasing a revised target of 125 runs in 13 overs after resumption of play, which was halted by rain, Punjab scored the required number of runs with 11 balls to spare. Punjab scored 126/1 in 11.1 overs.
After the resumption of the play, Punjab needed just 29 runs from 28 balls and the job was done in style by the formidable pair of Gayle and Rahul.
The latter however was dismissed by Sunil Narine at 60 runs from 27 balls, by which time Punjab had the match in its grasp.
A former Knight Riders player, Gayle remained unbeaten at 62 runs from 38 deliveries, hitting five fours and half-a-dozen sixes.
Speaking about importance of the toss, which was lost by Karthik, the Knight skipper said: "See if we had won the toss, we would bowled first again so that might have helped. But I think we had a decent total on board but we didn't bowl well enough. If we had picked few wickets, things would have been very different."
