Ashes 2nd Test: Australia on their way to a mammoth score, England pick up a single wicket on Day 1
After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, they scored 337 runs for the loss of a wicket in the stipulated 90 overs.
Australia lost David Warner in the 15th over when he was picked up by Moeen Ali.
The opening pair had added 78 runs. That was the only bright spot in the English bowling as they went barren for the rest of the day. Steven Smith coming in at no.3 played with patience along with his partner to frustrate the English bowlers and score their respective hundreds.
Steve Smith (129) and Rogers (158) displayed class and added 259 runs in 450 deliveries.
Brad Haddin, who had opted out of this Test match citing personal reasons, was replaced by Peter Neville. He became the 443rd Test player for Australia when he received his ‘Baggy Green’ from World Cup winning Australian captain Steven Waugh.
Earlier in the day, former Australian captain and Aussie great Ricky Ponting rang the ‘Ceremonial Bell’ at the ‘Mecca of Cricket’ to flag off the Test Match.
