Chennai: Ace Indian film director Mani Ratnam, who is known for making some iconic movies, turned 65 on Wednesday.

Since this morning, the hashtag  #HBDManiRatnam has been trending on Twitter.

Actor R Sarath Kumar wished him and tweeted: "Wishing the grand master of the entertainment industry a very happy birthday ,may the blessings of the almighty be showered in abundance on this special day #ManiRatnam @hasinimani."

Another senior actor Mahesh Babu posted: "Wishing the cinematic genius #ManiRatnam sir, a very happy birthday. Good health and happiness always!"

Ratnam has won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards, six Filmfare Awards South, and numerous awards at various film festivals across the world. In 2002, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, acknowledging his contributions to film.

He entered the film industry through the 1983 Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi.

The failure of his subsequent films would mean that he was left with fewer offers. However, his fifth directorial outing, Mouna Ragam (1986), established him as a leading filmmaker in Tamil cinema.

He followed that with Nayakan (1987). Mani Ratnam is well known for his "Terrorism trilogy" consisting of Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), and Dil Se.. (1998).

He recently shared the first look of his upcoming movie Ponniyin Selvan.
