Kolkata, July 10 (IBNS): A middle aged woman died after being knocked down by an over-speeding private bus at Barrackpore Chiriamore area in Kolkata's adjoining North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Tuesday morning, reports said.

According to reports, the woman was going to drop her daughter to her school and while she was trying to cross the road, a private bus of route-81 ran over her at around 7 am.

Eyewitnesses said that the bus, which was racing with another private bus (route-85) on same direction, escaped the scene following the mishap.

Local police said that the deceased has been identified as Neetu Gupta (42).

"The woman died on the spot while her nearly 7-year-old daughter was injured in the accident and she was rushed to nearby hospital," a local police official told IBNS. "The girl was discharged after first aid."

Police later seized the bus from Barrackpore station area while its driver and conductor are absconding.
