Agra/IBNS: A 38-year-old woman dentist was murdered Friday at her home in Uttar Pradesh's Agra by a man who entered the house at the pretext of recharging the family’s set-top box.

The assailant slit Dr Nisha Singhal's throat with a knife while her children aged eight and four were in another room, said media reports.

The children, who happened to witness the crime, were also attacked by the killer and suffered knife injuries. They are being treated in a hospital.

According to media reports, the Agra Police arrested the killer, who was identified from CCTV footage, today morning after he tried to escape police by firing at them.

“Teams were assigned to probe. We traced his bike and caught him. The suspect opened fire on police and was injured in the shooting. He has been admitted to the district hospital,” A Satish Ganesh, inspector general of Agra range, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Police said the accused has been identified as Shubham Pathak. He had come to rob the house, posing as a cable TV technician.

After the murder and the attacks, the killer remained inside the house for nearly an hour, police added.

The brutal attack and murder has triggered sharp reaction from the opposition.

Samajwadi chief and Congress Women's Wing tweeted about the horrific incident questioning Bharatiya Janata Party-led government's stance on the incident's of crime in the state.

"Uttar Pradesh is in a state of shock over the incident in Agra where a woman doctor's throat was slit inside the four walls of her home in a busy residential area. The BJP government is engrossed in covering up corrupt officials and drawing false cases against the leaders of opposition parties. Instead of channeling efforts on advertising itself on TV,  the state government should focus on bringing down  crime in Uttar Pradesh," the Samajwadi Party chief tweeted in Hindi.

"A 38-year old woman dentist stabbed to death in her house in Agra, U.P. There is ZERO safety for women in BJP ruled Uttar Pradesh. Law and Order is at its pits. While Ajay Bisht ji claims that "Crime is at a Minimum in UP, " tweeted All India Mahila Congress referring to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
