Wheat consignment from India through Iran's Chabahar Port reaches Afghanistan

New Delhi, Dec 26 (IBNS): The first consignment of wheat from India reached Herat in Afghanistan via Iran's Chabahar Port, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Deputy Governor of Herat, Mohyaddin Noori and Indian Consul General in Herat, Kumar Gaurav were present to receive the consignment of 1000 tonnes of wheat.

The Chabahar port is located in the Sistan-Balochistan province of Iran and is being seen as a new strategic route connecting India, Afghanistan and Iran; the port will not only ease trading between the three countries but also enable them to connect with other central Asian countries.

The port, easily accessible from India's western coast, allows India to bypass Pakistan, reports said.

According to media reports, political experts believe the opening of the Chabahar Port is also being seen as a foil to Pakistan's Gwadar Port that is being developed with Chinese investment.
