What is Thirukkural? Modi presents Russian-translated version of the ancient Tamil classic to Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Russian-translated version of the ancient Tamil classic Thirukkural during their bilateral meeting in Delhi ahead of the BRICS Summit.

Presenting the iconic Tamil classic to Putin, Modi shared the video of the moment on X and wrote: "Presented President Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, which carries the eternal wisdom of the great Thiruvalluvar across languages and borders."

The book is written by the great Indian Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar.

As per Encyclopedia Britannica,  Tirukkural, the most celebrated of the “Eighteen Ethical Works” in Tamil literature and a work that has had an immense influence on Tamil culture and life.

It is usually attributed to the poet Tiruvalluvar, who is thought to have lived in India in the 6th century, though some scholars assign an earlier date (1st century bc) as per the Encyclopedia Britannica website.

In its practical concerns, aphoristic insights into daily life, and universal and timeless approach, the Tirukkural has been compared to the great books of the world’s major religions, the website said sharing details about the book.

In a separate video shared by RT India, Modi and Putin could be seen sharing a hug an handshake during their meeting.
