West Bengal observes state holiday on former CM Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy's birth and death anniversaries
Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal on Wednesday is observing a state holiday on the state's former Chief Minister late Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy's 138th birth and 58th death anniversaries.
Jul 1 is observed as Doctors' Day nationally.
Amid the Covid-19 crisis, present West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has announced a state holiday to pay respect to the doctors and healthcare workers who are the frontrunners in the fight against the contagion.
Remembering her predecessor, Mamata tweeted, "Remembering former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy on his birth and death anniversary. The day is celebrated as National #DoctorsDay in his honour."
"On #DoctorsDay I congratulate all doctors, health warriors, the administration and their families. As a token of appreciation, GoWB has declared a State Holiday today in honour of the frontline COVID warriors," the CM tweeted.

Dr. Roy, who was the second CM of the state since India's Independence in 1947, remained in his office from 1948 to 1962.
The former CM, who was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1961, is credited for making five cities Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar and Habra in West Bengal.
He had also remained as the Kolkata Mayor during British era.
