West Bengal: 6 road mishaps kill 4 on Holi

Kolkata, Mar 23 (IBNS): As many as six road accidents at different locations in Kolkata and rest West Bengal killed at least four persons and left 20 others injured on Wednesday, according to reports.

At least four men were injured, when an auto crashed into a mini truck at Shri Aurobindo Sarani near Sovabazar in north Kolkata. Helper of the goods carrier and driver of the auto were also injured in the mishap. However, injured are being treated in National Medical College and Hospital and police have seized both vehicles.

A speeding private car hit the divider near Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) under Bidhannagar South Police Station area in Kolkata's satellite town Salt Lake sec-III. Three passengers of the car were injured in the accident and rushed to a private hospital nearby. According to police reports, all of them were drunk.

Another accident was reported from south Kolkata's Rabindra Sarovar area, where a speeding car hit a passerby. The injured man has been admitted to a nearby hospital. Police have detained the car and its driver.

An over-speeding bike lost its control and hit a tree, beside the road, near Princep Ghat in Kolkata. Two of the three riders were killed on the spot and rest one died later in Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital. Alleging that the hospital did not provide him proper treatment, youth's family members vandalized SSKM hospital. Police arrested seven persons in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, a speeding truck lost its control and hit at least three cars, one after another, at Hangsang Crossing area on Kona Expressway in West Bengal's Howrah district. At least seven persons were injured in the accident and were rushed to nearby hospital. Police have arrested the accused truck driver and seized the truck.

Another deadly road mishap was reported from Deulpota area in West Bengal's East Midnapore district, where two motorcycles skidded and hit an electric post, beside Kolaghat-Mecheda state highway. One youth was died on the spot and five others are being treated in Haldia Sub-Divisional Hospital.

On the day of Holi (Dolyatra), rash driving and reckless bike-riding, after having alcohol, were reported from several locations in Kolkata. According to Kolkata Police reports, as many as 254 motorcycles have been detained for rough riding and at least 54 persons have been arrested for creating chaos in drunk condition so far in the city.
