WB: Lockdown violators attack cops, vandalize police vehicles in Howrah's Covid-19 containment zone Tikiapara
Kolkata/IBNS: Policemen in West Bengal's Howrah were chased and attacked by a large number of locals at a containment zone at Tikiapara area. The incident occurred when cops had reached the scene to disperse lockdown violators on Tuesday evening.
After being informed that lockdown restrictions and social distancing norms were being violated in the area with several local youths gathering at Belilious Road near Tikiapara Police Outpost, policemen along with few Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel rushed to the spot around 5 pm.
When policemen were trying to disperse the mob from the containment zone to enforce lockdown, locals at a large number suddenly attacked the cops and vandalized at least two police vehicles.
Besides assaulting cops, the mob reportedly threw bricks at policemen and chased away security personnel from the area.
Later, a heavy police force and RAF rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Police, however, denied to comment on arrest figure.
"Situation at the area is under control, a heavy police force have been stationed there and our patrolling is on at the location," a senior official of Howrah City Police told IBNS.
"We will request people to stay at home, follow lockdown restrictions and cooperate with the police to contain the spread of Covid-19," the official added.
Condemning the incident, cabinet minister Rajib Banerjee said, "This incident is unfortunate and condemnable, will ask administration to take strict legal action against the lockdown violators who attacked policemen today."
