Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi, who is defeated in Amethi, takes oath for a fourth consecutive term as Lok Sabha member

New Delhi, June 17 (IBNS): Congress supremo Rahul Gandhi on Monday took oath as the member of the 17th Lok Sabha here.

Defeated in a popular Gandhi bastion Amethi, which was represented by him for several terms, Rahul Gandhi won the polls from Wayanad seat this time.

The Congress tweeted: "Congress President @RahulGandhi takes oath for a fourth consecutive term as a member of the Lok Sabha."

Rahul suffered a jolt in the polls from Amethi. He was defeated by Union Minister Smriti Irani.

He represented Amethi for three terms from 2004 to 2019.

Gandhi's oath taking was greeted by thumping of desks by Congress and other opposition members.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was present in the House.

His mother Sonia Gandhi, who represents Rae Bareli, is likely to take oath on Tuesday along with other lawmakers from Uttar Pradesh.

As per convention, after Prime Minister and Union Ministers, members are called for oath taking in alphabetical manner from the states they represent.

Gandhi had missed the morning session of the first session of the new House.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya had tweeted saying: "As the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha begins, Rahul Gandhi is nowhere to be seen. Such respect for India’s democracy".

Congress president, who was out of station, returned to the capital on Monday morning.
