The Uttarakhand government rescued 40 pilgrims stranded in Bundi village, following the closure of the Kailash Mansarovar road, with help of helicopters, media reported.

The pilgrims could not progress further as large boulders blocked the Kailash Yatra road and had to be brought to Dharchula, the administration said, reported India Today

The pilgrims had been stuck in Bundi village for nearly 36 hours.

Uttarakhand has been experiencing heavy rains which triggered landslides in several areas.

The Kanwar Yatra in the state also began in the state amid tight security.

Both Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake are located in the western part of Tibet Autonomous Region.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has two routes -- one through Uttarakhand's Lipulekh Pass and the other through Nathula Pass in Sikkim.

The route through Uttarakhand's Lipulekh Pass is considered a difficult track with inhospitable terrain and harsh weather.
