US condemns assault on Sikh cab driver, assures arrest of accused

Washington/UNI: The US on Sunday expressed concern over a viral video showing a Sikh cab driver being attacked at John F Kennedy airport in New York City and stressed that the country has the responsibility to arrest perpetrators of hate crimes accountable for their actions.

"We are deeply disturbed by reports of an apparent attack on a Sikh cab driver at J.F.K. airport, captured on video last week. Our diversity makes the US stronger, and we condemn any form of hate-based violence," State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said in a tweet.

"We all have a responsibility to hold perpetrators of hate crimes accountable for their actions, no matter where such crimes occur," they added.

This came after the Indian Consulate in New York urged the US authorities to investigate the attack on a Sikh cab driver.

"The assault against a Sikh taxi driver in New York is deeply disturbing. We have taken up the matter with US authorities and urged them to investigate this violent incident," it said on Saturday.

In the video of the incident, a man could be seen assaulting a Sikh taxi driver outside the airport.

During the assault, the cab driver's turban was also knocked off.
