UP elections: PM Modi urges people to vote

New Delhi, Feb 11 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people of Uttar Pradesh to cast their votes as polling for the first phase of the Assembly polls commenced on Saturday.

"आज उत्तर प्रदेश में पहले चरण का मतदान है। सभी मतदाता लोकतंत्र के इस महापर्व में भाग लें और भारी संख्या में मतदान करें।(Today, Uttar Pradesh is polling for the first phase of elections. I am urging all voters to participate in this festival of democracy in huge numbers)," Modi tweeted.

Voting commenced  for 73 assembly constituencies spread across 15 districts in politically crucial  western Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

Amid tight security, voting began in the state at 7 am.

Voting in the state will be held in seven phases.

Result of the elections in Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, UP and Manipur  will be announced on Mar 11.
