UN court rules in favor of Italy, India directed to free Salvatore Girone
Italian marine Salvatore Girone will be able to return to Italy while his case is subject to an arbitration procedure, the Hague tribunal that is dealing with the case has decided, upholding a request from Italy, Italian news agency ANSA reported quoted sources on Monday.
Salvatore Girone has been detained in India in connection with fishermen killing for more than four years.
The foreign ministry of Italy in Rome has confirmed the news.
"If the news is true, I'm incredibly happy," Girone's father Michele told ANSA. "Now I'll have to speak to my son and daughter-in-law to see whether it's true".
Two Italian marines were arrested by Indian authorities in 2012 following the killing of two Indian fishermen.
Massimiliano Latorre, who was also arrested along with Girone , returned to Italy with health problems.
However, India did not allow Girone to return home.
On Feb 15, 2012, security officials of the Italian cargo vessel Enrica Lexie allegedly shot dead two Indian fishermen mistaking them as pirates in the high seas off Ambalapuzha in Kerala.
The relationship between India and Italy have been soured over the entire episode.
