Guwahati, Nov 11 (IBNS): The ULFA (pro-talk) group hoped that the peace talk process between the government and the ULFA will gain momentum after the Bangladesh government handed over top ULFA leader Anup Chetia to India.

ULFA (pro-talk) leader and Chairman Arobinda Rajkhowa and Vice-Chairman Pradip Gogoi said they hope to see  the entire peace process to gain momentum.

“Since 2012, we are in peace process with the government and several meetings were held in past times. We and the people of Assam hope that, Anup Chetia will take part in the process,” Pradip Gogoi said.

On other hand, Monika Baruah wife of Anup Chetia aka Golap Baruah said that people of Assam were waiting  for the extradition for the past couple of years.

“I hope, he (Anup Chetia) will reach in his motherland soon,” Monika Baruah said.

After 18 years, Bangladesh government on Wednesday handed over the General Secretary of ULFA to India.

Anup Chetia was arrested from a house in Mohammedpur area on the outskirts of Dhaka on Dec 21, 1997 under the Foreigners Act and the Passports Act for illegally carrying foreign currencies and a satellite phone.

The top separatist ULFA leader was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a Bangladeshi court and was being held at Kashimpur Jail in the country.

Chetia sought political asylum in Bangladesh in thrice in 2005, 2008 and 2011.
