The deceased Indian students were identified as Chaitanya Tarre and Rishi Teja Rapolu. They have arrived in the UK a few months ago to study in the country.

"Sadly, one man died at the scene while another died in hospital," Essex Police said in a statement.

Police said five others were taken to hospital for treatment with 'serious' injuries.

"The drivers of the two cars – two men from Barking aged 23 and 24 – were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving," police said.

They have since been released on bail until 20 November.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.

The National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK (NISAU) issued a statement, expressing 'sadness' over the deaths of the Indian students.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Essex, UK, involving nine students from the Telugu community. The accident has claimed the precious lives of two young students, Chaitanya Tarre and Rishi Teja Rapolu," NISAU said in a statement.

"NISAU stands in solidarity with all the students and families affected by this tragedy. We are working closely with community members and relevant authorities to ensure the wellbeing of the students and to provide support wherever needed," the statement said.
