Two Assam farmers commit suicide in past 72 hours after losing everything in flood, erosion

Guwahati, July 25 (IBNS): Another farmer, who hails from flood-hit Assam’s Morigaon district, committed suicide after losing everything in the devastating flood and erosion in past 72 hours.

Earlier, a 45-year-old farmer Kushal Nath, hailing from Nijsohoria village under Bhuragaon revenue circle in the same district, committed suicide after losing everything in flood and erosion on July 23 morning.

On Tuesday, another farmer 32-year-old Tetal Chauhan committed suicide at the house at Ambagan village near Bhuragaon.

Local villagers said the farmer had lost his mental balance after losing his home, agricultural land, produce in devasting flood and erosion.

“Most families of Bhuragaon area had lost their agricultural lands, houses in flood and erosion. Some people had already left the area and took shelter in other parts of Morigaon district and neighbouring districts,” a villager said.

The current wave flood hit 29 districts out of 33 in the state and affecting over 25 lakh people.

This year flood claimed 77 persons across the state so far.

According to the reports of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 11 persons died alone in Lakhimpur district, while 9 died in Morigaon, 8 in Kamrup (Metro), 6 in Golaghat, 5 each in Jorhat and South Salamara, 4 each in Sivsagar, Nagaon and Dhubri, 3 each in Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Hojai, 2 each in Barpeta, Goalpara, Karimganj and one each in Dibrugarh, Majuli, Nalbari, Cachar, Dima Hasao, Bongaigaon district.

“Over 6600 hectares crop areas are still under water in 9 districts,” an ASDMA official said.
