Twitter says 'inadvertent error' after removal of Amit Shah’s profile picture

New Delhi/IBNS: Union Home minister Amit Shah's Twitter profile picture was removed and his account was locked on Thursday in response to a “report from the copyright holder”.

However, Twitter has said the removal of Amit Shah's profile picture from his account was due to an "inadvertent error".

A Twitter spokesperson said Shah's account had to be temporarily locked due to the social media giant's global copyright policies.

“Due to an inadvertent error, we temporarily locked this account under our global copyright policies. The decision was reversed immediately and the account is fully functional,” the spokesperson said, reported media.

Clicking on Shah's display picture on his Twitter handle, which is followed by 23.6 million followers, showed a blank page with a message, “'Media not displayed. This image has been removed in response to a report from the copyright holder.'”

Though the image was restored later, Twitter has not divulged further details. Twitter's copyright policy states: “In general, the photographer and NOT the subject of a photograph is the actual rights holder of the resulting photograph.”

Reports said Twitter's "inadvertent" error came on a day when the Union ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a notice to the social media giant seeking an explanation within five days why no legal action should be taken against it for showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir, and not Ladakh.

Media reports said Twitter has responded to the government's letter, however, it is yet to correct the map to show Leh as part of the Union territory of Ladakh, and not Jammu and Kashmir.
