Torrential rains choke normal life in Bihar

Quite many localities in the state capital, such as Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar and Patel Nagar have turned into a lake, forcing the authorities to close down schools.

“We received more than 100 mm rainfall in Patna since Sunday night as a result of which several localities have come in the grip of severe water-logging,” Patna Municipal Commissioner Abhishek Singh told the media on Monday.

He said that 37 pumps had been pressed to service to drain out the rain water from the water-logged areas and brig relief to the residents.

“We will able to drain out water in the next three-four hours,” he said.

The local authorities even issued landline and mobile numbers of its control room to help residents register complaints.

Last week, heavy rains had flooded the pilgrimage town of Gaya and Bodh Gaya as rainwater mixed with drain water entered many homes and threatened landslides, prompting the chief minister Nitish Kumar to visit the spot and order necessary action in this regard.

Although the waterlogging woes are over, the residents face major threats from hanging big rocks from a local Brahmyoni hills following landlines after record rains.

Meanwhile, experts have reached Gaya and are fencing the loosened rock. Authorities have already evacuated 70 families residing at the foothills of the hill from the areas and put them up in a relief camp.
