TMC MP Saugata Roy says he received death threats after arrest of party strongman Jayant Singh for assault of a woman

Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and MP Saugata Roy has revealed that he has received death threats following the arrest of TMC strongman Jayant Singh, linked to a viral video showing a girl being assaulted at Ariadaha Taltala Sporting Club, media reported.

"I got a call at 3 am and was stunned. The caller said I have to take initiative to release Jayant Singh. Otherwise, they will shoot me. I got two calls. I told them do what you feel like. They told me not to visit Ariadaha. I have given the number from which the call came to the Commissioner of Police of Barrackpore," Roy told India Today.

Roy alleged that the caller threatened to shoot him if Jayant Singh, said to be close to TMC MLA Madan Mitra, was not released, India Today reported.

Ariadaha falls in the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency, which Roy represents.

When Roy called back the number, he got an audio message in a South Indian language.

He also noted that the police had not contacted him since he filed the complaint.

Criticizing the West Bengal Police's handling of criminals like Jayant Singh, Roy questioned why stringent charges were not imposed on such people, enabling them to secure bail, according to the report.

However, he stated he would not request increased security from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, as it would hinder his public interactions.

Jayant Singh, a local TMC leader, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a teenager and her mother on June 30.

A video of the incident recently went viral, drawing sharp criticism from the BJP.

The footage shows several men holding the girl by her hands and legs, suspending her above the ground while others beat her with sticks.

Reacting to the video, Madan Mitra, the MLA from Kamarhati, said he had alerted the police about various wrongdoings at the club and had informed Saugata Roy, but no action was taken.

The TMC, however, claimed the video was from 2021.

BJP's Bengal president, Sukanta Majumdar, accused the Mamata Banerjee-led party of trying to create "talibans" across Bengal.

"This man was associated with Madan Mitra (TMC MLA). The accused person even attended a birthday invitation of Madan Mitra's daughter-in-law. He was working as a mafia. They are acting as anti-national in order to build a parallel army," Majumdar was quoted as saying by India Today.
