Tharoor slams Sushma Swaraj over her Bhagavad Gita remarks

| | Dec 09, 2014, at 05:42 am
New Delhi, Dec 8 (IBNS): Former Union Minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday attacked External affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for her comments on declaring holy book Bhagavad Gita as a national scripture and said he was astonished by her remarks.

Tharoor said he was 'Astonished' that Sushma Swaraj wants the Gita to be declared the 'national holy book'.

Voicing his opposition, he tweeted: " Hindusim is not a religion of a single sacred book:Vedas,Puranas,Upanishads all equally sacred;&India has many other faiths w/holy books."

Speaking at an event to mark the 5,151 years of the Bhagavad Gita, Swaraj appreciated Prime Minister's Modi move of presenting the Bhagavad Gita to US President Barack Obama.

"Gita should be declared as a national scripture," she said.

"I am feeling happy to say that Prime Minister Modi has  gifted the Bhagavad Gita to US President Barack Obama. It means that the holy book has already received the honour of a national scripture," she said.

"Today, we only need a formal announcement," she said.

Bhagavad Gita is a 700-verse Hindu scripture that is part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.
