Srinagar/IBNS: At least three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans were killed and seven injured after a patrolling party of the paramilitary force was attacked by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Handwara on Monday, reports said.

The attack has resulted in a fierce gun battle between the security forces and the terrorists.

This comes a day after two senior Indian Army personnel-a colonel and a major-and three other security personnel were martyred during an encounter with terrorists at Kupwara District in Jammu and Kashmir.

The encounter had begun on Saturday in the same Handwara area of the district in north Kashmir.

According to media sources, the terrorists targetted a CRPF patrol and launched heavy fire on them on Monday.

In Saturday's encounter, two terrorists were also killed.

Based on the intelligence input that terrorists were taking the civilian inmates of a house in Changimulla, (in the) Handwara (area) of Kupwara district, hostage, a joint operation was launch by Army and JK Police.

"A team comprising of five Army and JK Police personnel entered the target area occupied by the terrorists to evacuate the civ (civilians)," a statement had read.

A police officer was also among the deceased security personnel.
