New Delhi/Hyderabad/IBNS: The brutal rape and murder of the 26-year-old veterinarian, whose body was badly burnt and recovered in Hyderabad on Thursday morning, triggered massive protests across the state of Telangana on Sunday.

All the four accused arrested in connection with the rape and murder of the veterinary doctor have been sent to 14-day judicial custody on Saturday.

Women groups and the parents of the victim have asked for death penalty for the accused.

They have also accused the Telangana Police of handling the shocking case in an apathetic manner.

Owing to the outcry across the country demanding justice for the victim, three policemen have been suspended for alleged negligence in filing the First Information Report (FIR) in the case.

According to reports, hundreds of people resorted to protests outside the Shadnagar police station, where the four accused in the case are kept.

They had to be dispersed off by baton-wielding cops.

Protests were also taken out in Hyderabad with a demand for a speedy trial in the case.

The four accused have been identified as Mohammed Arif, Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu, Jollu Shiva and Jollu Naveen.

The rape and murder incident had triggered massive protests not only in Telangana but across the nation.

What happened?

On Wednesday night, the woman had gone missing while she was returning to her home from the workplace.

Her younger sister lodged a complaint with the police where she informed that she got a call from the victim at 9.22 pm on Wednesday stating she was stranded at a toll plaza as her two-wheeler had a puncture.

On Thursday morning, the police recovered her clothes, handbag, footwear and a liquor bottle near the toll booth where she had parked her bike.

The victim's body was found with 70 per cent burn injuries under a bridge, in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, which is some 30 km away from the toll booth.

The family could identify the body with the help of a Lord Ganesha locket that the victim used to wear.

The body was then handed over for autopsy.

The police suspect that the culprits might have strangled her after raping and then poured kerosene on the victim's body to burn it.

The bike was found 10 km away from the body.

Police have arrested four people in connection with the murder.
