Tamil Nadu: Temple priest brutally murdered by gang

Madurai/UNI: In a shocking incident, a junior priest of the famous “Pandi Muneeswarar Temple” was hacked to death by an unidentified gang within the temple premises in full public view here on Saturday evening.

Police said the deceased was identified as G.Muthuraja, a resident of Andar Kottaram hamlet.

The gang, armed with sickles and machetes barged into the temple premises and attacked the priest indiscriminately killing him on the spot.

The shell-shocked devotees and public ran helter-skelter on seeing the horrific murder. Since today is the fourth Saturday of the auspicious Tamil month of “Purattasi,” a large number of devotees congregated at the temple for darshan.

The assailants escaped from the spot after murdering the priest.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Madurai city R.Shiva Prasad rushed to the temple and held inquiries.

The body was removed to Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem.

Preliminary investigations revealed that there was a squabble between Muthuraja and a group during an ear-piercing ceremony held in the temple a few months ago. The murder might be the fall out of the enmity over the incident.

Anna Nagar police have registered a case and are searching for the assailants.
