Tamil Nadu: Six killed, multiple injured in boiler explosion in Neyveli lignite plant

Neyveli/IBNS: At least six persons were killed and 16 others seriously injured in a boiler explosion at NLC India Limited (NLCIL) lignite plant in Tamil Nadu's Neyveli on Wednesday morning, reports said.

According to reports, the boiler blast, which is the second such accident in two months in the plant, took place at around 10 am at the Unit-V of Centre-run 210 MW Thermal Power Station (TPS)-II.

Six contractual workers of the plant, who have been identified as Selamarasan, Arun Kumar, Padmanabhan, Ramanathan, Venkatesa Perunal and Nagraj, were killed in the accident while 16 others were injured in the explosion and 11 of them, who had sustained over 40 per cent burns, are undergoing treatments at NLCIL General Hospital in the township in critical conditions, officials said.

Local authorities said that the death toll could go up.

An inquiry has been initiated into the reason behind the deadly boiler explosion, according reports.

Earlier on May 7, another boiler in TPS-II's Unit-VI exploded, leaving at least five persons dead and several others injured.
