Supreme Court says states should consider online sales and home delivery of liquor amid lockdown
New Delhi/IBNS:The Supreme Court has observed that the states should consider online sales and home delivery of liquor to maintain the COVID-19 social distancing norms which were violated in almost all places in the country after liquor shops opened after a gap of more than a month on May 4, said a media report.
According to an Indian Express report, the bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, S K Kaul and B R Gavai hearing the plea of the petitioner Guruswamy Nataraj made the observation.
Appearing for Nataraj, advocate Sai Deepak said there were fewer liquor shops compared to the demand which resulted in overcrowding of shops and flouting of social distancing.
The plea sought Supreme Court's directive declaring the guidelines issued by the Central government on May 1, 2020 as null and void, “to the extent they permit the sale of alcoholic liquors for human consumption at liquor vends/shops through direct contact sales during the lockdown period”.
The Supreme Court bench told Sai that there are reports saying that discussion on home delivery etc are going on and asked Sai what he wanted to the Court to do. Replying to the court, Sai said the petitioner only wants the common man's life should not be affected because of the situation and the Centre should make clarifications on this and the states should abide by it.
The court declined to pass an order to this effect but made an observation that states should consider online sales and home delivery of liquor amid lockdown.
