Mumbai, Aug 25 (IBNS) : Several organisations in Maharashtra defied the Supreme Court on Thursday when they set up dahi handi tiers twice the limit set by the judiciary and allowing minors to participate in the traditional ritual sport on the occasion of Janmashtami, media reports said.

On Wednesday, the apex court had  set a maximum height of 20 feet  for the human pyramids formed during the celebrations.

The court had also barred  minors from participating in dahi handi.

Media reports said backed by the Maharashtra Nirman Sena of Raj Thackeray, thousands of people participate in Dahi-handi and youngsters formed human pyramids of  40-50 feet, which one has to climb to smash an earthen pot filled with curd.

The MNS reportedly  announced a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh for anyone who made nine or more tiers.

The Supreme Court had said on Wednesday that to increase the dahi handi height "is very scary" and stuck to the 20-feet cap. ". "Are you getting an Olympic medal also for this? Then we will be happy," the court had asked a Mumbai based group which petitioned it to allow higher handis.
