Supported by BJP, Mehbooba Mufti stakes claim to form govt in J&K
Srinagar, Mar 26 (IBNS): Supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), People's Democratic Party (PDP)'s Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday met Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra and staked claim to form the new government in the northern state.
Mehbooba Mufti will be the first woman Chief Minister of the state.
The swearing-in-ceremony date has not been decided yet said reports.
The development comes after Mufti's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
The meeting ensured an end to over two-month-long deadlock in the state.
After Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed passed away in New Delhi, the state was placed under Governor's Rule.
On Thursday, the PDP unanimously elected Mehbooba Mufti as chief ministerial candidate, ending a prolonged impasse in Jammu and Kashmir.
BJP and PDP had joined hands last year after no party got a majority in state elections. The PDP is the largest party with 28 seats - now 27 following Sayeed’s death - in the 87-member house. The BJP is second with 25 seats.
