Shaheen Bagh protesters join BJP, AAP alleges conspiracy

| @indiablooms | Aug 18, 2020, at 03:01 am

New Delhi/IBNS: More than 50 activists, who became the face of protest against the citizenship law at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reports said on Monday.

The people who joined the BJP on Sunday includes social worker Shahzad Ali, gynaecologist Dr Mehreen and former AAP worker Tabassum Hussain, who were among the well-known faces at Shaheen Bagh.

The 24-hour, 101-day protest at Shaheen Bagh in northwest Delhi became the ground zero for anti-CAA protests across the country. It was halted after the spread of panic over the coronavirus outbreak.

Following the joining of these activists in BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that the protests were ruse by the saffron party for political gains.

"The Shaheen Bagh protest was the BJPs main election issue... the BJP stands exposed now as the organisers of the Shaheen Bagh protests have joined BJP," AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj was quoted as saying by NDTV.

He accused the BJP of polarizing Delhi to win the election.

The protest was a key issue for the BJP ahead of the assembly elections.
