Setback for Mamata as five Goa TMC leaders quit ahead of elections

Goa/IBNS: In a setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), five of its primary members in Goa have resigned barely a few weeks ahead of the assembly elections in the coastal state, media reports said.

The five leaders include a former legislator Lavoo Mamlatdar.

The members told TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in their resignation letter, "We had joined the AITC with a hope that it would bring brighter days for Goa and Goans. But it is unfortunate to bring to the notice that AITC has not understood Goa and Goans."

"AITC's move to polarise Hindu votes towards MGP and Catholic votes towards AITC is purely communal in nature. We do not want to continue with a party that is trying to divide Goans. We will not allow AITC and the company managing AITC Goa to break the secular fabric of the state and we shall protect it."

Taking a dig at the TMC, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put up a tweet which reads, ". @AITCofficial leader Shri Lavoo Mamledar has exposed the communal agenda of the TMC.

"He has also brought out how TMC is fooling Goans in the name of schemes. People of Goa will teach a lesson to this party in the elections."

The TMC, which won the 2021 assembly elections in West Bengal by a huge margin, is aiming to keep its feet in other states including Goa.

The party has already announced it will contest in the Goa polls due to be held early 2022.
