Security beefed up after pro-Khalistani group threatens Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati/UNI: The Assam Police have beefed up the security of Himanta Biswa Sarma after a “designated terrorist under Indian law”, who is heading a pro-Khalistan group in the US threatened Chief Minister in an audio clip alleging torture on the Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh Sandhu’s close aides lodged in Dibrugarh jail since March 19.

Assam DGP G P Singh said they are in touch with central agencies and a case has also been registered with the special task force police station.

“We have briefed the security cover of the CM about it. An investigation into the case has been started. Whatever lawful action is to be taken under the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, we will take them in due course,” Singh said.

In the purported audio clip, the pro-Khalistani leader allegedly said, “This message is for Assam CM Himanta Sarma. Your government is harassing and torturing pro-Khalistan Sikhs in Assam. And also torturing those who are in jail. Listen carefully, CM Sarma, the fight is between pro-Khalistan Sikhs and the Indian regime. Sarma, you should not fall prey to this violence."

"We are seeking the liberation of Punjab from Indian occupation through a peaceful democratic process of the Khalistan referendum. Sarma, if your government is going to torture and harass Sikhs, you will be held accountable,”  the message added.

The DGP further said India declared Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who sent the pre-recorded audio clip, as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on July 1, 2020, and the group he is heading, ‘Sikh for Justice’, was banned in 2019.

Meanwhile, the outlawed insurgent outfit ULFA (I) has written an open letter to the pro-Khalistani group "Sikhs For Justice" after it threatened Sarma.

In the letter, ULFA-I expressed their disappointment with the alarm raised by "Sikhs For Justice", stating that it is unfortunate and misunderstood.
