Scores storm Rabindra Sarobar Lake to perform Chhath Puja

Kolkata/UNI: Scores of devotees on Saturday broke open the gates of the Rabindra Sarobar Lake to perform Chhath Puja.

The security personnel had no option but to open the main gate of the Sarobar to allow the devotees enter the lake.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has made it clear that puja cannot be performed inside the lake premises as it's polluting the water body.

The devotees stormed into the Sarobar in spite of the fact that the gates of the lake are manned by private security agencies as well as by few Kolkata Police, under the Kolkata Municipal Development Authority (KMDA) personnel, and broke the locks of the gates to enter the lake.

Even as the BJP blamed the State Government for failing to control the devotees,  Trinamool Congress Secretary General Partha Chatterjee said the KMDA would look into the matter.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conveyed her greetings to the Chhath devotees for “celebrating the day in strength and prayers”.
