SC to hear petition to rename India to Bharat on Jun 2

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court will hear a plea on June 2 seeking its direction to the Centre to amend the Constitution and officially change the name of the country from India to "Bharat", said media reports.

The petitioner has claimed that this will enable the citizens to get rid of the colonial past and fill them with a sense of pride in their nationality, said an India Today report.

He said the time has come to identify the country with its original and authentic name, especially when the names of various cities of the country have been changed to match the Indian ethos.

The case was listed before a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, but was rescheduled for June 2, as he was not available, said the report.

The petitioner has argued that there was a strong wave in support of naming the country Bharat or Hindustan even in the debate on Article 1 in 1948 Constituent Assembly.
