SC junks petition seeking probe into Rahul Gandhi's citizenship
New Delhi, May 9 (UNI): The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the petition seeking probe into Congress president Rahul Gandhi's alleged British citizenship.
After hearing from all parties including the petitioner Jai Prakash Bhagwan, and respondents, a bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI), refused to hear the petition and dismissed it.
"We dismiss this petition. There is no merit in it," the CJI said.
"If some company in some form mentions his nationality as British, does he become a British citizen?" the top court bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, said.
Last month, the government had asked Rahul Gandhi to respond within 15 days to a complaint that he was a British citizen. The complaint was filed by parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who has for years been accusing the Congress president of lying about his nationality.
The government had asked the Congress president to give a "factual" reply on his citizenship.
Only Indian citizens can contest elections in the country.
