New Delhi:  Another West Bengal MLA has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the West Bengal Assembly polls which is witnessing a tough battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP.

Santipur MLA Arindam Bhattacharya on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the  presence of senior party leaders like Kailash Vijayvargiya here.

Bhattacharya is a MLA from Nadia's Santipur constituency.

"Shri Arindam Bhattacharya joins BJP in presence of senior BJP leaders at BJP headquarters in New Delhi. #JoinBJP," BJP tweeted.

Bhattacharya had won the 2016 Assembly polls by contesting for the Congress but then shifted to the TMC later.

Meanwhile, former cricket administrator Biswarup Dey on Wednesday joined the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, days after ex-cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla resigned as the state minister.

Dey, who was the joint secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), joined the party, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in presence of parliamentarians Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray at the Trinamool Bhavan here.

Dey cleared it was only Banerjee's "spirit" which inspired him to join the Trinamool, which is facing stiff fight from the aggressive Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in poll-bound West Bengal.

"We have seen how a depleted Indian team created history against Australia in Brisbane only due to spirit. I am not a blind supporter of the Trinamool Congress but I am joining the party only because of Mamata Banerjee's spirit," he said.

"I have seen how Mamata Banerjee is tackling attacks from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar like a cricketer on the basis of spirit," the former CAB administrator said in cricketing terminology.

West Bengal will plunge into an electoral battle in April-May as the BJP is aiming to unseat the Trinamool to wrest power in the state for the first time.
