New Delhi, Apr 5 (IBNS): Reacting to the conviction of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in a blackbuck poaching case, veteran actress and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan has said the former must be given relief, media reports said.

She told media, "I feel bad. He should be given relief. He has done a lot of humanitarian works."

The Jodhpur court on Thursday pronounced a five-year jail term in a case that dates back to 1998.

However, actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, who were also accused in the case, have been acquitted.

The bail plea of the 52-year old actor will be taken up on Friday, according to media reports.

The actor was whisked away to Jodhpur Central Jail from the court itself after the verdict was delivered by Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri.

The actor was also fined Rs. 10,000.

The actors were accused of poaching a blackbuck, an endangered species protected under the Indian Wildlife Act, in Kankani village of Jodhpur during the shooting of film Hum Saath Saath Hain in September, 1998.

Khan was convicted under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
