RS Chairman Ansari calls all-party meeting on hate speech deadlock
The chairperson appealed to all parties to “maintain civility in public discourses and uphold commitment to constitutional values.”
Earlier, a united opposition had insisted on a resolution that “strongly disapproves of any statement by an MP or a minister that is inflammatory and derogatory and violates the letter and spirit of the Constitution.”
Opposition parties also said the minister deserved condemnation and outright sacking.
The government, however, refused it saying the minister’s apology and PM Modi’s statement should be enough on the issue, reports said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled out Jyoti’s resignation.
The Rajya Sabha had adjourned on Monday within minutes of starting the day’s business over opposition protests, reports said. The minister is expected to campaign in Delhi again.
Jyoti, 47, had apologized in Parliament last week for her speech in which she said: “The people of Delhi have to decide if they want a government of Ramzaadon (descendants of Ram) or those who are illegitimately born.”
