Rs 133 crore lost due to govt-opposition deadlock in parliament : Report
New Delhi/IBNS: Parliament disruptions in the monsoon session resulted in a loss of taxpayer's money amounting to Rs 133 crore as the impasse between Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration and the opposition over the Pegasus snooping scandal continued, according to media reports.
The opposition has been demanding a discussion and an independent inquiry led by a Supreme Court judge, serving or retired.
According to an NDTV report, a statement given out by unnamed "government sources" on Saturday said because of the deadlock the Lok Sabha has been in session for only about 7 hours out of a possible 54, and the Rajya Sabha worked for 11 hours out of a possible 53.
"So far Parliament has functioned only 18 hours out of possible 107 hours. Thus around 89 hours of working time have been wasted. This means that the total loss to the taxpayers is More than Rs 133 crores," the statement said.
Four days ago, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had accused the Congress of not allowing the monsoon session of parliament to function and asked the BJP leaders to "expose the party before the public and the media".
PM Modi accused Congress of willfully rebuffing attempts at resolving an impasse that has seen little work due to continuous protest by opposition over Pegasus, farm laws and other issues.
